FEBRUARY

I think it’s fair to say that Tre Cime is the most photographed landmark in The Dolomites. I’d say it’s probably one of the most photographed mountain landscapes in all of Europe. Tre Cime di Lavaredo comprises three strikingly prominent peaks roughly 2,000 feet in height (The three peaks are named: Cima Piccola, Cima Grande, and Cima Ovest). Because these peaks are nestled in the heart of the dolomites, Tre Cime ultimately skies just under 10,000 feet above sea level in totality.  You can see why a shot at sunset was on my photography bucket list. Thankfully, we were staying at Rifugio Auronzo, a hotel at the base of the western side of the peaks.

On the third evening of our stay, the state of my sore legs and clear skies (each of the first two evenings I was exhausted from long days of intense hikes. And both nights, the setting sun was accompanied by rapid and intense cloud inversions that enveloped our hotel in a thick white mist in a matter of minutes) converged to portend a beautiful sunset.

On tired legs we made the half mile trek around the peaks towards the viewpoint that faces west, towards the setting sun, with all three peaks clearly visible. Although I did not trek far enough east to get to the more famous wide view of Tre Cime I like that this perspective feels unique and my own.
